Biography

 

Professor Dr. Abul Kalam Azad Chowdhury

Professor Dr. Abul Kalam Azad Chowdhury was born on 21st October 1946 at Feni, Bangladesh. He obtained B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. in Bio-Chemistry in 1967 and 1968 respectively from Dhaka University. He obtained PhD in Pharmacy in 1976 from University of Manchester, UK. He was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Chemistry from 1976-77 at University of Nottingham, UK.

Professor Chowdhury started his career as a Lecturer of Dhaka University in 1968. Later he became the Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology of Dhaka University in 1985. He was the Invited Professor in the Department of Biology, Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM), Paris, France in 2003. He was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dhaka from 30th September 1996 to November 2001. At present, he holds the position of Chairman (State Minister), University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. His fields of specialization were higher education, Pharmacogenomics,

 

Genomics of chronic diseases (heart diseases, diabetes, cancer); Health and Drug Policy; Phytochemistry, Pharmacology of neuromedicines.

Professor Chowdhury is a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He is the Coordinator and Founder Member of Central Committee, International Network for Rational Use of Drugs (INRUD), Arlington, USA; and the WHO-Regional Expert on Essential Drugs.
