BAAS at a Glance

The Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science is a multidisciplinary professional society founded by the eminent scientists of the country with the noble objective of advancing the cause of Science and Technology in the country. BAAS is a forum of personnel of the country engaged in research and development activities in various fields of Science and Technology.

  1. Work for the general advancement of science including its application to practical problems.
  2. Promote and encourage research in different branches of science and to help development of science on national level.
  3. Organize conferences, symposia, seminars on subjects of scientific interest, excursions and field studies, Hold meeting to discuss problems of special importance to the country and to exchange knowledge among its members.
  4. Stimulate public interest and enlist public for science.
  5. Award research fellowships, financial grant-in-aid for special research.
  6. Award prizes in recognition of the scientific contributions in the annual science conference.
  7. Publish proceedings, journals, memoirs, transactions and books, as may be found desirable and feasible for dissemination of knowledge concerning pure and applied sciences.
  8. Promote and safeguard the interests of scientific workers in Bangladesh.
  9. Undertake international representation of scientific work done in Bangladesh.
  10. Maintain, develop and extend international relations in the field of science and maintain contacts with foreign scientific organizations with similar objects.

Membership
The BAAS membership is open to persons who have attained the age of 20 years and possess at least Bachelor Degree in Science, Social Sciences and Technology. There are several categories of membership, such as, Ordinary Members, life Members, Honorary Members and Session Members. The membership is subject to payment of annual fees as stipulated for different categories.

The Council
The BAAS Council consist of the president of the association, two vice-presidents, treasurer, general secretary, two joint-secretaries, presidents of the sections, president of the local chapters, the immediate past president of the association, the immediate past general secretary of the association, and five council members.

The Bangladesh Science Conference
The Science Conference, which was earlier held annually and has been changed into a biennial programme since 1992, has a number of academic, professional objectives for the interest of the development of science and Technology in the country. The conference is held under the following sections:

IX. Zoology, Fisheries, Entomology, Animal Husbandry, Poultry, Wild Life and Biology.
VIII. Social sciences, Psychology, Anthropology, Education, Economics.
VII. Engineering sciences and Technology.
VI. Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, Nutrition and Veterinary Sciences.
V. Geology and Geography and Disaster Management.
IV. Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Environmental chemistry, Nano and Material Chemistry.
III. Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Statistics and Computer Science.
II. Botany, Microbiology, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Biotechnology, Forestry and Plant Pathology, etc.
I. Agronomy, Soil Science and Horticulture, Agricultural Extension.

Organized under the above sectional committees, The Bangladesh Science Conference focuses on the various national problems of immediate importance on science and technology as well as economic development of the country. Since 1976, when the first science conference was held, the BAAS has sponsored so far 22 Conferences in different parts of the country.
